In the heart of the mountains, hidden within the magnificent scenery, lies the town of Corte, often called the "soul of Corsica".
Corte is home to the island's only university, which counts Napoleon's father among the alumni and which was reopened in 1981. Our guides have more information and trivia about this school.
The stone stair at the Place Paoli lead to the smaller Place Gaffori and a bronze statue of General Jean Pierre Gaffori, a Corsican freedom fighter. Visitors can opt for a cup of coffee at a cozy local cafe.
The next stop is the Citadel of Corte, built on a rocky cliff overlooking the sea.
The Citadel was constructed by the Aragonese kings in 1419. The museum tells its full story from the political, economic, and cultural perspectives. After an optional lunch** in Corte, the tour continues.

The path leading to the mountain lakes is rather narrow, but the especially dangerous stretches are secured with chains.
Through the valley of Tavignano the route leads to Aleria, with more historical landmarks and trivia.
